Litany of St. Joseph

The Litany of Saint Joseph is one of the six litanies approved by the Church for both public and private use. It summarizes the qualities that made St. Joseph such an important member of the Holy Family.

Although he does not appear much in Scripture, this “just man” (as he is called in Matthew 1:19), a humble carpenter, served our Lord and the Blessed Virgin Mary faithfully.

Referring to Saint Joseph as Christ’s “watchful protector,” this litany reminds us of his important role in fleeing with Mary and Jesus into Egypt in order to protect our Lord from death at the hands of King Herod (Matthew 3:13–16).

St. Joseph is known as the “patron of the dying.” The faithful ask his help for workers, merchants and home sellers, and, of course, carpenters and many others!

Let us pray:
Almighty God, in Your providence You chose Saint Joseph as the spouse of the most Blessed Virgin Mary. We venerate him with confidence here on earth as our protector and beg You that he may be our powerful intercessor in heaven. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
O Lord, may the merits of the spouse of Your most holy Mother help us. And what we ourselves could not obtain, grant us mercifully through his intercession. For You live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

Saint Joseph, virginal foster father of Jesus, most pure spouse of the Virgin Mary, each day pray for us to Jesus Himself, the Son of God, that strengthened by His grace, we may wage a victorious battle in life and after death receive from Him the crown of victory.
To you do we have recourse in our tribulations, O Saint Joseph, and we beg the help of you and of your spouse. With confidence we cry out to you to protect us.
By the love that united you to the Immaculate Virgin, the Mother of God, and by the fatherly tenderness with which you embraced the Child Jesus, look upon the inheritance which Jesus Christ acquired by His blood, and with your mighty aid help us in our needs.
You, diligent protector of the Holy Family, guard the chosen offspring of Jesus Christ; keep from us, loving father, every contagion of error and sin.
Help us from heaven, our mighty protector, in the battle with the powers of darkness, and just as you delivered the Child Jesus from the great danger that threatened His life, so also defend the holy Church of God from the snares of the enemy and from every adversity, and receive all of us into your lasting protection, that following your example and with your help we may live a holy life, die a holy death, and attain eternal blessedness in heaven. Amen.
