Litany of Loreto

The Marian Litany of Loreto ("Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary"), whose present form dates to the 15th century, is prayed on Marian feasts, on Saturdays, and is often prayed at the end of the Rosary. It received its name from Loreto, a small town on the eastern coast of central Italy, in the Marche region. There is located the so-called Holy House of Loreto, a small house measuring about 8 by 4 meters and 4 meters high, with a door on the north side and a window on the west side.

According to tradition, this house is the place where Mary was born and where the archangel Gabriel announced the Annunciation to her. It is said that angels transported it from Nazareth to Dalmatia in present-day Croatia after the Saracens regained the Holy Land, and then to Loreto in 1291. The flight of Saint Gabriel from heaven during the Annunciation caused Our Lady of Loreto to be regarded as the patroness of aviators and air travelers - Charles Lindbergh, the Apollo 9 astronauts, and Umberto Nobile, who flew over the North Pole in the 1920s, all carried an image of Our Lady of Loreto with them.
