Litany of the Most Holy Name of Jesus

Throughout all of Sacred Scripture, God named or renamed those who had a great role in our salvation. As recorded in the fifth chapter of Genesis, He named the first man Adam, which means "Man of the earth," and changed the name of our spiritual Father from Abram to "Abraham," which means "Father of many nations."

And so the name "Jesus" also has its meaning: The Name of Him who is also known as "Emmanuel" ("God the Savior") is a transcription of the Hebrew name Yehoshua, or Joshua, and means "Yahweh is salvation."

The formalized devotion to the Holy Name is the fruit of the work of Saint Bernardino of Siena, from the years 1380-1444, a Franciscan who reformed his order and preached sermons throughout Italy. During these very popular sermons, he spoke of the veneration of Christ's Name and held up the monogram - the letters "IHS" (or "JHS") - surrounded by rays. This ancient monogram is a Latinization of the Greek monograms for Iesous Christos, "IH XP" and "IC XC", and became even more popular after Saint Bernardino encouraged a playing-card maker in Bologna to produce holy images instead of his usual wares. The apostolate of the Holy Name was also continued by Saint John of Capistrano, from the years 1385-1456, and we attribute the Litany of the Holy Name to both.

Honor the Holy Name of our Lord and use it with deep reverence.

Lord Jesus Christ, thou hast said: Ask, and ye shall receive; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you; we beseech thee, grant us to feel thy divine love, that we may love thee with our whole heart, by word and deed, and never cease to praise thee. Lord, grant that we may always have reverence for thy holy name and also love it; for thou dost never cease to govern all those whom thou dost establish in thy love. For thou livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.
