Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a special form of devotion to the physical heart of Jesus. It is the love that He shares with the Father and the Holy Spirit toward humanity. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries, devotion to the Sacred Heart arose in Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries. From the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries, this devotion was practiced by various congregations, such as the Franciscans, Dominicans, and Carthusians, but it remained an individual or private devotion. Saint Eudes made it public in the seventeenth century, introduced an office for it, and established a feast. He shared devotion to the Sacred Heart together with his devotion to the Immaculate Heart. Gradually these devotions became separated, and the first feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was celebrated on August 31, 1670. On December 27, 1673, on the feast of Saint John, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a sister in the Monastery of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in France, had visions of Jesus. He [Jesus] asked her to promote devotion to His Sacred Heart, symbolic of His love for humanity. Jesus added twelve promises for those who practice devotion to His Sacred Heart, including peace in families, comfort in times of hardship, abundant blessings, and refuge at the hour of death. At the instruction of Pope Leo XIII in 1899, the whole human race was solemnly consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
