Novena to Our Lady of Pompeii

On March 3, 1884, Our Lady of Pompeii appeared before the gravely ill daughter of an Italian military officer. Through her, the Blessed Virgin Mary gave the world the miraculous devotion of the 54-day Rosary. For more than a year, Fortuna Agrelli suffered from a serious illness, even to the brink of death. Her condition was so grave that the most renowned physicians already considered her a hopeless case. In desperation, on February 16, the sick girl and her family decided to begin a Rosary novena.

Two weeks later, one evening, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, appeared to Fortuna. She sat on a high throne, surrounded by radiant figures, holding the Divine Child in her arms and a rosary in her hand. Both were clothed in golden garments, and they were accompanied by Saints Dominic and Catherine of Siena.

The Blessed Virgin Mary said: "Child, your faith has pleased me. Whoever wishes to obtain graces from me should make three novenas of Rosary prayers and three novenas of thanksgiving."

Obedient to the invitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Fortuna and her family completed the six novenas, during which the young girl was completely healed and her family was bestowed with many blessings.

This novena is prayed for 54 days. To obtain a grace, three novenas of 9 days each must be made. Then it is necessary to make another three novenas in thanksgiving. Altogether, 27 days of Rosary prayers are needed to obtain the grace and 27 days of Rosary prayers in thanksgiving. That means 54 days in total.
