30-Day Novena of Devotion to the Lord’s Passion

Judas’s betrayal of Jesus was followed by a deep burden for Jesus. The burden consisted in the fact that He would soon go to the cross, where He would be separated from God, because He bore the punishment for the sinners whom He would save. It was a heavy burden, because He was covenantally separated from His Father. It was too much for Him to bear alone, and so He prayed.

Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and He said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with Him. And sorrow and distress came upon Him. Then He said to them, “My soul is sorrowful even unto death. Remain here and keep watch with Me!” Going a little farther, He fell on His face and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.” When He returned to the disciples, He found them asleep. And He said to Peter, “So, could you not keep watch with Me for one hour? Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation! The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again He went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup cannot pass unless I drink it, Your will be done.” And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy with fatigue. Leaving them, He went away again and prayed a third time, saying the same words. Then He came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep on now and take your rest! Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going! See, My betrayer is at hand.” (Matthew 26:36–46)

30-Day Novena of Devotion to the Lord’s Passion

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Glory, honor, and praise to our Lord Jesus Christ; may the whole world love you; may your Holy name be blessed; may he be praised who humbled himself for us sinners and was born of the humble Virgin; and may your infinite love be blessed, which offered itself upon the cross for our redemption. O Jesus, Son of God and Savior of mankind, we beseech you to have mercy on us, and so direct our lives by your grace and love that we may rejoice forever with You in Your heavenly kingdom.

O dear Jesus, my blessed Savior and Redeemer, sweet consoler of all sorrowful, abandoned, and despairing souls. Behold, your poor servant humbly kneels at the foot of Your holy cross, imploring Your mercy.
Have mercy on my soul and show compassion toward it in this temporal and urgent suffering (weakness, poverty, temptation, the troubles of life, or anything else concerning spiritual or bodily suffering).

Hear my prayer, O refuge of all the sorrowful and afflicted! Behold, look upon my tears, upon my sorrows, and heal my distress. Because of my great sins I have fallen into cruel calamities and do not know where to seek help, or to whom I should complain. To you alone, my humble and merciful Savior. I am full of hope and trust that you, my living Redeemer, desire to hear my sorrow and to look with mercy upon the humble plea of your poor child through that sweetness which your blessed soul experienced at the time of its union with our human nature, when, in counsel with the Father and the Holy Spirit, you determined to unite Your Divine Person with mortal flesh for the salvation of man. You sent your angel to the Blessed Virgin Mary with the joyful message and clothed yourself in our human nature, and became true man for the space of nine months in the sacred womb.

Through the sufferings which you endured in the dark night in the Garden of Gethsemane, when you prayed to your Eternal Father, that in fulfilling divine providence, you desired that the bitter chalice might pass from you; yet with perfect surrender you accepted your lot in the words: not my will, O heavenly Father, but Yours be done.

Through the grievous wounds, cruel shame, harsh blows, blasphemies, false witnesses, false accusations, and unjust judgment, which You, innocent Lamb, patiently endured; through the chains with which Your limbs were bound, the tears that flowed from Your eyes, the Blood that streamed from Your whole body; the fear, pain, and sorrow of your heart; the shame which you underwent when you were stripped of your garment in order to be hung naked upon the cross before the eyes of your sorrowing Mother and before all the people.

Through Your royal head crowned with thorns and struck with a reed; through your thirst quenched with vinegar and gall; through the wound in your side opened by the spear, from which flowed blood and water to refresh our souls by that living fountain of your love and mercy; through the sharp nails by which your tender hands and feet were cruelly pierced and nailed to the cross; through the commending of your soul to the Heavenly Father in the words: Into your hands I commend my spirit; through the prayer for your enemies in the words: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do; through the giving up of your spirit in the words: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? and through the bowing of your most blessed head, that you might give the kiss of peace in the words: It is finished.

Through the great mercy which you showed to the repentant criminal in the words: Today you shall be with me in paradise; through your descent into the underworld and the joy when you announced it to the righteous souls imprisoned there; through the glory of Your victorious Resurrection and your forty-day appearing to your holy Mother, your apostles, and other chosen friends and servants; through your wondrous Ascension, when before the eyes of your holy Mother Mary and the apostles you ascended into heaven; through the miraculous sending of the Holy Spirit in the form of tongues of fire, when you filled the hearts of your disciples with love and gave them the strength and courage to plant your faith throughout the whole world; through the terrible day of the general judgment, in which you will judge all mankind.

Through all these afflictions, joys, compassions, and all those who have drawn near to you and now love you in heaven and on earth, have mercy, O compassionate Redeemer; hear my prayers and grant me that for which I now ask you in the greatest humility and secrecy.

State what you are praying for, or at least make your intention present in your mind.

Grant me, O gracious Savior, quickly to feel your divine help and consolation. Grant me, O my most holy Jesus, constant faith, sure hope, perfect charity, sincere repentance, sincere confession, peace of soul, diligent care of myself against future failings, heroic contempt for the world, complete victory over my passions, fervent imitation of your exemplary life, full fulfillment of my promises, absolute weakening of self-confidence, willingness to die out of love for You, perseverance in works of mercy and good works, a happy departure of my soul from this world, with a perfect gaze upon you, strengthened by your sacraments. I beseech you, dear Jesus, strengthen me together with your holy Mother, with my holy patrons and saints. Intercede for me also, you my good guardian angel, and lead me to eternal rest, eternal life, and eternal happiness. Amen.
